It is with great sadness that I have to advise members that Jim Alford died in Mayday Hospital on Thursday 15th October 2009. Jim had been a keen short wave listener and constructor for many years and was particularly interested in the design and construction of loop aerials for the HF bands. He had been a member of this club since the 1980s and had served on the committee in the early 2000s.
The funeral will take place at 2:!5pm on Tuesday 27th October 2009 at the Elmers End Crematorium. The club will be represented and will be sending flowers. If you would like to send your own flowers please contact the funeral undertaker Cliff Hollett on 020 8653 3366.

Recent Event News
2nd October - Portables, Mobiles and Test Equipment
Your scribe brought along sufficient test equipment to test the basic functionality of a receiver and transmitter including:
 TF2008 10KHz - 510MHz Signal Generator
 TF2300A 5.5 - 1000MHz Modulation Meter
Bird Through-line RF Power Meter & Load
 TF893 AF Power Meter
 TG200D AF Oscillator
 TM6B Broadband Millivoltmeter
 4D25 Dual Beam 25MHz Oscilloscope
 PS120M Power Supply, 4-13V 10A
Homemade GDO and RF Dummy Load
 9911 Frequency Counter
 Low cost SWR Meter
The function of each item was described along with demonstrations of
measuring RF power output of a VHF hand held transceiver on a Bird Thro-Line directional power meter
using an oscilloscope to view the sine and square wave output of an audio oscillator followed by an AM waveform from the signal generator.
The TF2008 generator is particularly useful as, in addition to a manually tuned oscillator, it has a voltage tuned oscillator covering the full width of each band that can be driven from the X output of an oscilloscope for filter testing.
Thank you to Trevor M0DIA and Robert M3RJK for bringing along items of communications equipment to be tested. Trevor's receiver was used with the signal generator and audio output power meter to demonstrate how to test for sensitivity.
Kempton Radio & Electronics Rally on 27 September and RSGB Ham Fest on 2-3 October
Your scribe attended both of these events with particular interest in the Ham Fest as this was the first time that this event had been held.
The Kempton Rally was very similar to past events with a mixture of commercial, club and personal stands offering a wide range of equipment and components. A good carrier bag full of useful parts found its way back to Coulsdon.
The RSGB Ham Fest took place at the Newark and Nottingham Show Ground, a short distance from Newark mainline railway station. This event was organised by a collaboration between the RSGB and The Lincoln Short Wave Club.
Stands included well known amateur radio equipment suppliers, component suppliers and a selection of clubs and other amateur radio based organisations including RAOTA and RAIBC.
One very interesting item on sale for £4.50 on the G6ALU stand was a pre-programmed PIC chip and matching LCD display that could be used to make a frequency counter and optional SWR Bridge if the user provided the bridge components. This stand was also offering the MKARS80 80m transceiver kit and an opportunity was taken to discuss this with the designer.
The journey from London by train took about one and a half hours each way. The Lincoln Club staff were very helpful in organising taxis back to the train station.
The following picture shows civic parties from Lincoln and Newark cutting the radio shaped cake at the opening ceremony.
Next years event will take place on 1-2 October 2010.
Future Club Meetings and Events
6th November - Club Discussion with Alison Johnston G8ROG followed by "A History of Power Supplies"
This meeting will be in two parts:
It will commence with a discussion on the future of our club at which the RSGB Region 9 Manager Alison Johnston G8ROG will be present followed by a question and answer session. This will give members a chance to consider all of the options before an EGM which will take place at the start of the January 2010 meeting.
The second part of the meeting will be entitled "A History of Power Supplies" during which Victor G1PKS and Bob G3OOU will review a wide range of power sources, both pre and post electricity supply.
Some demonstrations will be given including a Lemon Battery and much more up to date power supplies.
15th November - CATS Annual Bazaar
Victor G1PKS and your scribe will be manning a table at this event and will be pleased to see any club members that attend. The venue is the Scout Hut at the rear of the Lion Green Road car park in Coulsdon and is a two minute walk from Coulsdon South mainline railway station. The 60, 166 and 265 buses travel from Croydon to Coulsdon. Refreshments will be available.
4th December - Christmas Social
The Christmas meeting will be a social gathering to which members and their partners are invited. Members are asked to bring along a contribution of food just sufficient for them and their guests. Facilities will be provided to heat food in the kitchen.
1st January 2010 - EGM
As this is New Years Day we are investigating moving it to the following Friday if the meeting room is free.
The meeting will commence with an EGM to decide on the future of the club. The date and balance of this meeting will be advised in the next newsletter. The EGM results will be reported in the February 2010 newsletter.

Members News
Victor G1PKS, Don G3WDY and your scribe are carrying out equipment tests with a view to setting up a net on either 4m or 6m.
Technical Snippets
An interesting new IC that surfaced recently are the Silicon Labs SI570 and SI571 which are described as `Any-Rate I2C Programmable XO/VCXO'. The Si570 XO/Si571 VCXO utilizes Silicon Laboratories' advanced DSPLL® circuitry to provide a low-jitter clock at any frequency. The Si570/Si571 are user-programmable to any output frequency from 10 to 945 MHz and specific pre-programmed frequencies up to 1400 MHz with <1 ppb resolution. The device is programmed via an I2C serial interface. Unlike traditional XO/VCXOs where a different crystal is required for each output frequency, the Si57x uses one fixed frequency crystal and a DSPLL clock synthesis IC to provide any-rate frequency operation.
The devices are enclosed in eight pad surface mount packages 5mm wide by 7mm long and run on 1.8 - 3.3v supplies, depending on the part number, with a maximum supply current of 130mA. The crystal reference standard is completely enclosed in the package.
SAQ diary dates from the Swedish LF station
The historic Alexanderson alternator transmitter located at Grimeton, Sweden is preserved as a museum and is operated by volunteers on various special days throughout the year. The station will transmit CW on its usual frequency of 17.2kHz on 24 October at 0900UTC and 24 December at 0800UTC. Listen out for SAQ. These transmissions are well worth listening to if you can rig up some kind of the receiver; the musical sound of the keyed alternator is unique. No reports required and no QSL cards are given for the October transmission but QSLs are available for the Christmas Eve transmission. For more information check out www.alexander.n.se
Computer Corner
By the time that you read this newsletter the new version of Windows will be on release. Known as Windows 7 it claims to be faster, smaller and more robust than previous versions. If you decide to upgrade, you must make sure that compatible hardware drivers are available for your particular set-up. [Source RSGB web site]
The club technical web site is being significantly expanded to include more block diagram and circuit information on communications functions and their use in more complex equipment.
Miscellaneous
The club net on 145.525MHz has been having problems with what appears to be deliberate interference for some weeks now in the form of an unmodulated carrier that appears on the channel, for seconds or minutes at a time. Any members that have 2m beams are asked to monitor the net on Wednesday evenings to try and determine the direction of the interference.
