Recent Event News
I am sorry to have to inform you that club member Eddie Homewood G4KBY died peacefully on the morning of 30th June in Lewisham Hospital after suffering from renal failure following a heart attack.
Eddie's funeral was held on the 15th.July at Beckenham Crematorium and the club was represented by Victor G1PKS. An obituary is included later in this newsletter.
2nd July 2010 - The History of the Woodside Brickworks - Edward Handley
We were entertained to a polished talk, illustrated by sides, of a part of the history of Croydon. The brickwork site was purchased in 1912, and work to excavate the yellow and blue London clay commenced. The yellow clay went down to a depth of 15 ft, the blue clay below it a further 65ft. The clay was excavated by a variety if diggers, and carried in trucks on a narrow gauge railway that ran around the 46 acre site. A large pool was also dug below the Blue clay to collect the water from the Thames basin, which was then pumped away.
In 1918 six chimneys were built to carry away the hot air and smoke from the clamps and hives where the bricks were baked. In WW II these chimneys were used by German bomber pilots to find London, or as a target if they wished to drop their bombs and return to France as quickly as possible, The damage was considerable, and three chimneys were demolished because they were unsafe. In 1944 the sire was occupied by the Canadian Troops preparing for the invasion of France, and the site was packed with heavy equipment and tanks. In 1945 a V2 landed in the water pool, exploding and causing more damage.
After the war production started, as bricks were in great demand to repair the war damage. Some of the Canadian troops remained and worked on the site. This was followed by immigrants from the West Indies . At that time the site employed 250 men, who produce 1 million bricks every week 52 weeks a year.
The site was eventually sold to Hall & Co, then passed to RMC who decided that bricks were no longer as important in building as concrete, and the site was filled in, burying some very valuable machinery. Mr Handley suggested that a Time Team investigation might recover some of these.
The site is now a park, with a very deep lake, and is bordered by Davidson and Birchanger Roads.
Future Club Meetings and Events
6th August 2010 - Summer Barbecue
The next meeting is our Summer Barbecue and the club will be providing the food. Would those members who are going to attend please let me know by return so that I can arrange for the correct amount of food. Please also let me know if you are bringing a friend and if you are a vegetarian or have any special food requirements. Emails, letters or telephone are fine but do not delay!
8-10 October 2010 - RSGB Convention
The RSGB convention has now become one of the most popular and well-attended events of the year. Those who have attended the event over the years will recall that the move to Wyboston was made to accommodate the event's increased attendance. However, we have now outgrown this venue too. As a result we have decided to move the 2010 RSGB Convention to Horwood House near Milton Keynes.
It has been announced that space scientist and Sky at Night presenter, Dr Lucie Green will be lecturing at the RSGB Convention later this year. As part of the VHF & Up stream, Dr Green will be talking on her work in understanding how immense magnetic fields in the Sun's atmosphere evolve to the point where they erupt as a coronal mass ejection. Last year, Dr Lucie Green was the recipient of the 2009 Royal Society Kohn Award for Excellence in Engaging the Public with Science.
Please note - the November 2010 meeting has been moved on by one week to 12th November to avoid a clash with Fireworks Night activities.

Victor G1PKS represented the club at Eddie Homewood's funeral and writes:
"I was able to attend the funeral of Eddy today, and it was very well attended. It is sad that interesting aspects of one's life are never heard until after you have passed away.
Eddie was a corporal in 17th Squadron RAF in 1941, and was a radio mechanic, servicing hurricanes in Malaya, until the Japanese army forced them to flee to India, where he then serviced the radios of Spitfires. Later he landed in Singapore with the invasion fleet, just in time for the Japanese surrender. Later he returned to the UK and was a Radio and TV maintenance engineer for many years. One of his hobbies was car racing, and he enjoyed going to the circuit trials at Crystal Palace. He always offered assistance to those around him, looked after his dogs and cats. He leaves a wife, daughter and grandchildren."
Technical Snippets
I have been busy building equipment and researching information on the ancient art of valves, particularly those intended for use with batteries.
a) The picture below shows a CV2299 or DL73 wire ended, directly heated valve with a 2.2W anode dissipation
and specified up to 200MHz. These were used in a Hudson Electronics high-band transportable battery operated FM transceiver dating from the 1960s and in the A43 Military Manpack.
b) Another interesting valve used in some slightly earlier military battlefield transceivers is the DL98. This is a B7G based device and specified as an amplifier / oscillator with a maximum output of 1.25W on a 150V supply.
If you are interested in valve technology, get hold of and keep older Radio Handbooks as modern versions have very little in the way of valve based information. They are often available at rallies for as little as £1 each and well worth collecting. A low cost book binding kit will allow the spine to be rebound and the covers repaired or replaced as required.
A lot of service manuals for Military equipment from the post WWII period are freely available on the Internet and from the VMARS web site and are a valuable source of information.
My new power supply is now complete and tested and waiting on completion of the transverter. The following photo shows a front view (in the switched off state):
Computer Corner
Cloud Computing - What Is It?
Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories:
 Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)
 Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)
 Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).
The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbol that's often used to represent the Internet in flowcharts and diagrams.
A cloud service has three distinct characteristics that differentiate it from traditional hosting.
 It is sold on demand, typically by the minute or the hour;
it is elastic - a user can have as much or as little of a service as they want at any given time
the service is fully managed by the provider (the consumer needs nothing but a personal computer and Internet access).
Fourth Property of Electrons? Electric Dipole Moment Would Explain Creation of Universe
ScienceDaily (July 20, 2010) - Electrons are negatively charged elementary particles. They form the shells around atoms and ions. This or something similar is what you will find in text books. Soon, however, this information may have to be supplemented.
The reason is that many physicists believe that electrons have a permanent electric dipole moment. An electric dipole moment is usually created when positive and negative charges are spatially separated. Similar to the north and south poles of a magnet, there are two electric poles. In the case of electrons, the situation is much more complicated because electrons should not actually have any spatial dimension.
