07 May 2010 - An Introduction to the UK Foundation Licence
Our last meeting was a brief introduction to the Foundation Licence given by Victor G1PKS, Alan G8NKM and Bob G3OOU. In the time available it was only possible to cover a small part of the syllabus and members were invited to give their comments. Victor spoke to several members after the talk and gathered some feedback for our next Trainers Committee meeting.
All three of our trainers have now completed their registration with the RSGB and work continues on preparing the training materials.

04 June 2010 - An Introduction to Military Communications - Michael O'Bierne G8MOB
Michael writes: "I will cover the following topics
 The aim of military communications
A brief overview of the many tasks of the Army
The Chain of Command and the rank/command structure
 Tactical communications
 Security issues
 Radio Relay communications
Briefly if time permits, electronic warfare issues.
A demonstration of several military radios, e.g. MEL PRC2000 backpack SSB HF transceiver, a Clansman passive preselector for the VRC321 HF SSB transceiver and an Iraqi VHF backpack FM transceiver.
 Questions and summing up.
My military career started with the school CCF using WS19 and 88s and WS31s. Then 20 years plus in the TA with 71 (Yeomanry) Signal Regiment (V), then Staff College and then 6 years on the military staff of HQ SE District, Aldershot and HQ Land Forces, Wilton."
This promises to be an extremely interesting evening.
2nd July 2010 - The History of the Woodside Brickworks - Edward Handley
We try to have one non amateur radio talk each year and the July meeting will cover the history of a brick manufacturing company that existed in Woodside for many years. Apparently Woodside also had a racecourse many years ago.
Members News
a) Victor G1PKS has very kindly offered to take on the role of Club Secretary for the remainder of this club year.
b) The first part of your scribe's multi-function power supply unit (PSU) has been switched on with no smoke or sparks so far. The main chassis wiring is complete and secure but the front panel wiring and controls will be temporary for now as they have to be removed in order to paint and letter the panel when testing is complete.
The following picture shows a rear view of the main chassis layout and almost completed wiring with the front panel resting slightly away from the chassis:
The finished unit will supply 1.3KV DC at 350mA, 300/420V DC at 200mA, -140V DC at 10mA, 12.0/12.6V AC at 15A, 6.3V AC at 3.5A, 6.3V AC at 3.5A. All of the heater supplies are isolated from ground in the PSU to avoid hum loops and the latter two supplies are going to be used with 2C39 based amplifiers where the cathodes are internally connected to one side of the heater. A low value resistor will be required to ensure that the heater voltage to each 2C39 does not exceed 6.0V.
A simple anti-surge circuit limits the inrush current at switch on and a lockout has been provided to disable all of the HT supplies in the event of a failure of the negative bias supply.
This PSU will be used to power a three band transverter and several power amplifiers.
Technical Snippets
Using 2C39 triodes on 23cms requires some additional care compared to lower frequencies as back heating of the cathode can occur at high powers causing the cathode to overheat on transmit. The usual solution is to reduce the heater voltage to 5.5V on transmit by inserting a resistor of around 0.5 ohms in series with the heater supply to each valve. On receive this resistor is shorted out.
Line output valves (sweep tubes in Amercian parlance) were extremely popular in the fifties and sixties in high power amplifiers because the high gain and high cathode emission levels enabled peak anode currents of one amp or more to be obtained with low drive levels.
Designers typically used four of these valves in parallel in a grounded grid configuration to run anything up to 800W peak input on SSB which was way beyond the valve ratings. The handbooks always stated "Do not hold the key down or whistle for too long!" otherwise a new set of valves would be required. One manufacturer came up with an interesting design using ten valves in parallel to run 2KW peak input.
Several common errors in all of the designs were
The lack of current sharing which meant that if one valve failed it could lead to a cascade failure of all of the remaining valves. A simple solution is to add a small resistor to each cathode circuit to force current sharing.
An assumption that linearity was not a problem - this was correct on CW but became a problem as SSB became more popular. One manufacturer came up with an interesting solution that compared the amplifier input and output signals and made small changes to the negative bias if non-linearity was detected. The result was a significant improvement to the inter-modulation products at the output.
Insufficient cooling of the valve envelopes
A lot of these valves still exist at attractive prices so several amateurs in the States have been addressing problems in older commercial amplifiers in order to extend their cost effective operational life and minimise interference to other band users.
Several Japanese HF transceivers used sweep tubes in the final amplifier stage. Examples of these types of valve are PL509, PL519, 6DQ6, 6JB6, 6LQ6, 25LQ6, 31LQ6. The higher voltage heater versions are significantly cheaper than the 6.3V versions and are often seen at UK radio rallies and sales.
A simple example of a grid driven class AB1 amplifier can be seen at http://g4oep.atspace.com/ by selecting the "PL509 7MHz PA" option.
Computer Corner
Trevor M0DIA has been investigating the installation of Kubuntu Linux on one of his PCs. Linux is well known for requiring significantly less machine resources than Windows and is ideally suited to older PCs that may not be entirely suitable for Windows.
Most distributions of Linux provide access to libraries of free applications covering a wide range of subjects.
Miscellaneous
a) Following a request by the RSGB last November, Ofcom announced on 14 May they were able to permit operation of stations by amateur radio Full licensees, using specified frequencies in the 5MHz experimental band, after the existing NoV expired on 30 June 2010 and until 30 June 2015. A fresh NoV application is required. [Source RSGB web site].
b) The following web site provides a wide range of components for both valve and solid state equipment:
c) There are two HF CW contests due to take place in the near future --CQWPX on 29-30 May and RSGB National Field Day on 5-6 June.
