5th February 2010 - Annual General Meeting
The meeting was well attended and we were pleased to see one visitor and a few members who normally have some difficulty in attending meetings - thank you for making a special effort.
The Club Discussion commenced with your Chairman summarising the problems that have faced the club over the last few years and stating that much more support is required in order for the club to continue in operation. It was disappointing to note that only 10 survey forms were returned, despite a first class SAE being sent to members. Some of the forms included significant detail which will be reviewed by the committee in the near future.
Members were then invited to voice their own ideas and opinions on the club's future. Suggestions included:
More emphasis on electronics and computing, not just amateur radio
Provision of amateur radio license training courses
Holding an open day during the summer
Advertising via the church, schools and other local organisations.
AGM: The minutes of the 2009 AGM were read and approved and officer's reports were read and approved.
Our Treasurer advised that a small loss was made on each monthly meeting but that the club was relatively well funded from donations and sale income in the past that had been invested. He was not therefore proposing to increase either the meeting fee or the annual subscription this year but would review the finances before the end of 2010 and advise accordingly. One or two members suggested that an increase should be made for 2011 and this was noted.
Ceri, our auditor has some outstanding work to complete on the accounts because of late receipt of the December bank statement and these will be presented to members at an EGM for approval.
The motion in agenda item 7 was carried by a clear majority and your Chairman will review the club support and activities before the end of 2010.
Election of Officers: Chairman - Bob Burns G3OOU, Treasurer - Robert Kelso M3RJK, Secretary - position not filled. Ordinary committee members: Victor Johnston G1PKS and Don Pike G3WDY. Victor has offered to continue with the postal distribution of the newsletter.
The committee will look for a Secretary and appoint an auditor for the 2010 accounts in due course.
Club Program suggestions for 2010: Computing and Printing Basics, Basic Electronics, Radio Controlled models, Croydon Carnival attendance, an open day.
No awards were presented this year.
The 2010 AGM minutes will be available at the March meeting.
Post meeting note - Victor is gathering the information and CRB application forms that are required to get authorisation from the RSGB to hold training courses. Three members have put their names forward as prospective tutors.
Following the decision to continue in operation, annual subscriptions for 2010 and now due. Please send your £9.00 sub to our treasurer Robert or pay him at the next meeting.

Members and Club News
a) We welcome Alan O'Donovan G8NKM as a new member. Alan came along to the Group Discussion and AGM and signed up at the end of the evening. His interests are in home construction, HF/VHF operation and programming in C, C++ and Java.
b) Don G3WDY has agreed to take on an additional GB2RS news reader role on Sunday mornings from 09:00-09:30 on 3.643MHz and will alternate with G3WUZ.
c) The roof, outer claddings and ceilings of our meeting venue have been repaired and a new floor has been laid in the main meeting room at All Saints and further renovation work is planned. The initial result looks very good.
d) Your chairman and his XYL departed for a week's holiday in Madeira. The weather was a considerable improvement on that in the UK with daytime temperatures in the 16-20oC range and some rain only on the last full day.
Some HF aerial installations were seen during our visit, one very close to our hotel.
While walking around the streets of Funschal we spotted the following overhead mains wiring:
The island uses a series of horizontal concrete water channels called Levadas which are used to carry water from one part to another. There are approximately 2500Km of these channels with the longest one being 102Km. Each channel is about 1000mm deep by 600mm wide with a path on one side for access and repairs. The repair gangs often have to wheelbarrow loads of concrete one or two Km from the mixing point to the repair site as the paths are not sufficiently wide to support transport or mechanised tools. The major benefit is irrigation but tourists can walk most of them with or without guides and see how the infrastructure of the island is constructed.
The final picture shows the terracing that is used to allow small plots to be constructed on the steep hillsides for growing crops:
e) Brian Cannon G8DIU has just moved house from Worcester Park to Yapton in Sussex. He will be well out of range of our VHF club net but is able to receive the Sutton and Cheam HF net on a temporary wire aerial.
Technical Snippets
a) A picture of your scribe's rotatable VHF aerial array is shown below:
The lowest aerial is a combined 3 element for 50MHz and 4 element for 70MHz on the same boom and using a single feeder followed by an 8 element for 144MHz, an 18 element for 432MHz and a vertical colinear for 50, 144 and 432MHz. The Daiwa rotator is mounted at the bottom of the mast on a flat roof and is controlled from inside the shack. A separate bearing holds the mast to the top of the extension roof seen in black at the lower left of the picture.
The thin wire in the upper right is part of the stub loaded HF bands dipole covering 1.8 - 30MHz but also usable on the VHF bands with a special Z-Match - details on the technical web site.
b) The subject of component units on circuit diagrams has been exercising the minds of members recently on one of the electronic forums on Yahoo so back to basics for a moment.
The unit of capacitance is the Farad and in the "old" days, most capacitors (they used to be called condensers) were shown as mfd or microfarads i.e. one millionth of a Farad. As a Farad is an extremely large unit of capacitance, it is rarely seen except for capacitors used as short term batteries. Very small capacitors like a 500pF tuning capacitor would have been shown as 500mmF or 0.0005mfd and more often than not the leading zero would have been omitted. This often led to problems reading poor quality or very old and faded circuit diagrams.
The unit of inductance is the Henry which is a large value in RF circuits and is more usually shown in much smaller multiples and the unit of resistance is the Ohm.
Modern circuits implement an abbreviated form of annotation with the multiplier letter being used instead of the decimal point where appropriate and there are some minor differences in standards between Europe and North America.
Resistors:
R = ohms, K = thousand ohms, M = million ohms, G = thousand million ohms, T = million million ohms and P = thousand million million. For very low values, m = milli-ohms or thousandths of an ohm and u = micro-ohms or millionths of an ohm.
So typical values would be written as 1R2 (1.2ohms), 4K7 (4,700ohms), 5M6 (5,600,000 ohms) etc.
Capacitors: (note that the F for Farad is often omitted)
p = picofarad or one million millionth of a Farad,
n = nanofarad or one thousand millionth of a Farad
u = microfarad or one millionth of a Farad
m = millifarad or one thousandth of a Farad
F = Farad
So typical values would be written as 0p47 (0.47 picofarad), 1n8 (1,800 picofarad), 8u2 (8.2 microfarad or 8,200,000 picofarad) etc. Note that picofarad is pronounced "puff" for short.
Inductors:
n = nanohenry or one thousand millionth of a Henry, u = microhenry or one millionth of a Henry, m = millihenry or one thousandth of a Henry, H = Henry.
So typical values would be shown as 4n7 (4.7 nanohenry), 5u6 (5.6 microhenry), 8m2 (8.2 millihenry), 47H (47 Henry) etc.
Note the use of small letters for multipliers of less than one and capital letters for multipliers of one or more. Also, it is not unusual for the trailing zero to be omitted so you would see 1R, 10p, 10H etc.
It is perfectly valid to use the Greek symbol m instead of u for one millionth so 1u0 and 1m0 mean the same thing. It is also valid but much less usual to use the component type letter at the end of a value for clarity i.e. 4u7F or 1u5H - if you see 4u7 next to a capacitor you know that it is a sub multiple of a Farad.
Next month we will look at the standard incremental values used for most components.
Computer Corner
If you want to share the construction of and access to documents with others over the Internet then one possibility is Writeboard from a website called http://writeboard.com/. This is a free facility which allows a group of users to access the data from an Internet point anywhere in the world. All that is required is a name for your board, a password and an email address.
Similar sites exist for holidaymakers and travellers to store their digital photos while on their journies so as to minimise the risk of loss. All that is required is access via an Internet café somewhere in the world.
