Recent Event News
09 April 2010 - An Evening of Short Talks
This meeting consisted of the following three short presentations:
An Introduction to Optics by Don G3WDY
Don talked about and demonstrated the effect that different shaped lenses have on light using a light box with a simple grating to produce parallel lines of light. He also demonstrated the diffraction caused by inserting a plain piece of plastic or glass into the light beam.
Members were then invited to try out the various lenses for themselves.
The Air Traffic Management System by Alan
Alan spoke briefly and showed a number of slides on the historic and current overall management system that is used to control UK air space, the various heights that are used and the location of the control centre.
It was generally agreed that this would make an interesting topic for a future full length talk.
The FT-450 by Bob G3OOU
The FT-450 is a relatively new transceiver and in the time available only a brief description of its RF architecture, menu based control system and rear panel interfaces were covered. Ham Radio Deluxe, a free Windows application by Simon Brown, works very well with this rig using the appropriate serial data lead and additional connections are provided for an external data modem and linear amplifier.
Future Club Meetings and Events
07 May 2010 - An Introduction to the UK Foundation Licence
At the AGM it was agreed that this club would commence running training courses for the Foundation Licence and three members, Victor G1PKS, Alan G8NKM and Bob G3OOU have applied to become registered instructors with the RSGB. This process includes checks with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) which can take up to two months and approval of our meeting room for training and examination use so we are planning for the first course sometime in October this year.
Information packs are beginning to arrive from the RSGB and two CRB checks have been completed to date. The RSGB also publish a book for each of the three grades of licence with the first one entitled Foundation Licence Now! More information is available from their website at http://www.rsgb.org.uk/.
The next meeting will review the Foundation Licence conditions and requirements in three short presentations:
Victor will cover Licence conditions, Feeders and Aerials
Alan will cover Technical Basics, EMC and Safety Issues
Bob will cover Transmitters and Receivers, Propagation and Operating Practices & Procedures.
Members News
Your scribe is currently running a Morse class in Banstead for the Sutton & Cheam club with some ten students in attendance.
Technical Snippets
a) The club technical web site has been significantly extended with both semiconductor and valve based circuits and information plus current progress on some of your scribe's projects which incl;ude a valve transverter and power supply built in the Heath SB-Line style.
If members have their own projects that they would like included please let one of the committee have the details for publication.
b) HF band activities are definitely on the increase now with more signals in evidence and more Dx being reported.
Computer Corner
a) Passwords. Have you ever forgotten one of your computer passwords? As Windows moves on, reverse engineering passwords gets more and more difficult with some passwords now not being capable of decryption.
There are two standard options to get round your forgetful problem - an application that can decrypt your lost password or a different application that can encrypt and write a new password into the correct place on your computer. There are several versions of each of these applications available from the Internet, some free and some requesting a small payment. As ever, make sure that you have an up to date virus checker installed before downloading any files.
b) Ubuntu Linux has been upgraded to v9.1 and the apparent problem with the GRUB boot loader searching the entire hard drive for several minutes seems to have been resolved.
Ubuntu Linux and most other Linux distributions are completely free if downloaded over the Internet but attract a small charge for the media if ordered on CD or DVD. Even better are the hundreds of free applications that are available to run under Linux. Included in this collection are a number of amateur radio applications and Computer Aided Design packages.
Ubuntu Linux has proved to be extremely reliable with an automatic update facility which rarely requires a reboot and no system crashes.
Newsletter Content
A regular task every month is finding content for this newsletter. With few contributions and even less feedback it is becoming increasing difficult to find content of interest to members. Some news can be legitimately `borrowed' from other publications with a suitable acknowledgement but it is increasing uncertain what members would like to see included.
It would help if club members could indicate their preferences in the way of content - a letter or email would be fine. Even better would be some contributions!
Miscellaneous
Your scribe attended the Kempton Park rally on 18th April and came back with a well filled bag of bits and pieces. The event was well attended and there was a wide range of stands including private, radio clubs, charities and the larger UK equipment suppliers.
The following photo shows the Bring and Buy stand run by the Coulsdon Amateur Transmitting Society (CATS) close to the main entrance.
What is become increasingly evident is the increase in prices of legacy equipment and spares. Valveholders are now typically 50p to £1.00 each in reasonable condition and variable capacitors often several pounds each.
The rally season is now in full swing and there are a number of events within a reasonable travelling distance of South London that have been or will be included in our Diary of Events.
HF Contests:
The HF bands will be extremely busy during the following contest if previous years are anything to go by:
29/30 May - CQ WPX Contest (CW)
If you are going to take part, even for an hour or two, please check the rules to make sure that you are familiar with the required exchanges. Full information available from http://www.cqwpx.com/
